Background and experience
My background is in the public services, in education and in training. While completing my teacher training, I gave birth to my daughter and as a new parent, the emotional wellbeing of children both in and outside education became increasingly important to me. This led me to study a 4-year pathway in integrative child and adolescent psychotherapeutic counselling, under the University of Cambridge. I qualified in 2021 and now specifically work with children and adolescents both privately and across primary and secondary schools and in sixth form colleges.
How I work
I am trained to work with young people aged between 4 to 24, and, as appropriate, their families, to enable them to show and share their feelings and experiences. This allows overwhelming states to be externalised, contained, and safely worked through, empowering young people to understand their emotional life and find the solutions and resilience they need.
My approach is integrative which means I can flexibly draw on several theoretical orientations to meet the need of the young person. My training has primarily been in humanistic and psychodynamic counselling, but I also apply theory and skills from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis and existentialism as required. An understanding of current neurobiological research underpins all work. I employ a range of creative methods: expressive arts, play and sand-tray. These facilitate communication, help explore underlying issues and together move towards an increased understanding.
